Serving the Rescue Community Since 1994

The RIT KITS shown on this page have been designed by and manufactured exclusively for BPC, so there's no middle man. We use only quality rope and carabiners from the countries top manufactures. Over the last few years, we have personally worked and trained with numerous fire departments and our RIT KITS and ESCAPE POUCHES are currently in service with firefighters throughout the country. Their feedback, input and suggestions have inspired us to create common sense equipment that is easy to use and adaptable to existing techniques and protocol within the fire service. We also follow NFPA guidelines and we assure you that any components that must meet NFPA standards will do so. Please feel free to print our Team Search Guidelines which may be used to formulate or enhance your own procedures.

RIT Rescue Equipment and
Firefighter Self Rescue Equipment

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this outline is to present the basics of team search with the maximum safety and control. The following are only the foundation for skills required in team searches. A team search requires a great deal of personal and team discipline.

Team searches are most often used to search large open areas such as convention centers, commercial properties, schools, office area and industrial buildings.

Equipment options vary from basic to optional. Basic search equipment may consist of a 200-foot search line (guideline) equipped with snap hook or carabiner for securing outside of search area. Searchers are equipped with individual tether lines in 30-foot lengths that also provide personal escape capability. Control Man should have a grease board or clipboard to record information. Tether lines are equipped with a snap hook for attaching to guideline and attached to the firefighters bunker gear with snap hook or carabiner and stowed in bellows pocket or pouch when not in use. Strobe lights are an effective way to mark entry and exit points when used in conjunction with door wedges. Search lines made with ARAMID (Kevlar) fibers offer the added security of high heat and flame resistance as well as the toughness of Kevlar. These lines offer twice the heat resistance of ordinary static lines. Remember if your guide line is melted or severed by debris your team may become separated from the control point. Optional equipment includes but is not limited to the following: Thermal Imaging Device, Stokes Basket (to remove victim), door wedges, strobe lights and support or back up company.

The team consists of a minimum of six members. A seventh can be added if thermal imager is used. The team leader (officer) is responsible for overall team operation, including but not limited to: informing members of search objective (search for life or fire) and special hazards, control and deployment of guideline, communications, search termination and SAFETY of the team.

Search Team positions will include: CONTROL MAN — responsible for monitoring the search team from a position at or near where the guideline begins. The Control Man also identifies the number and names of people entering for the search or rescue, maintains radio contact at all times, monitors entry and exit air times and communicates entry and exit air times with team leader during operation. SEARCHER #1 and #2 act as a team and perform searches off the guideline using their personal tethers as directed by the team leader.

RESCUE TEAM: Will consist of two people at a stand by position that will provide rescue if such assistance is required. In prolonged operations, this team may also provide relief for the first search team. At least one member of this team should be radio equipped.

THERMAL IMAGER: If a thermal imaging device is available it should be dedicated to a trained operator who will work in conjunction with the team leader and provide navigational assistance as well as monitoring search team members and changing atmospheric conditions in the search area.

OPERATIONS: The Team Leader is informed by the incident commander. The Team Leader then assembles his team and gathers equipment. He sees that the guideline is secured at the entrance and marked by a strobe light. Guideline should be kept at between knee and waist high. Control Man marks names and air time, team leader advances into search area on hands and knees feet first. "Remember if you can't see your feet you shouldn't be on them." Search team members attach to guideline, Team Leader and Control Man keep constant communications, rescue team stages near Control Man. Search team advances and searches to the position of the Team Leader who places an overhand knot in the guideline. Search team clips into knot loop and searches outward off of their tethers while using ax handle in a sweeping motion in front of them. It is essential to keep good rope management especially when returning to the guideline. Team Leader then advances another 15 or 20 feet and search team advances to next overhand knot and repeats search sequence. The search continues until objective is located (life or fire). If search team does not locate objective in 10 minutes, the Control Man orders Team Leader to tie off and start back out. The Team Leader ties off search bag at that point. Search team follows guideline back out to strobe light and the RELIEF team then follows guideline back up to tie off point and resumes search until the maximum area has been searched. Ten minutes in, ten minutes out and ten minute buffer. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD TEAM MEMBERS BREAK OFF GUIDELINE AND GO ON THEIR OWN. SEARCHERS MUST: Obey orders immediately, constantly be aware of changing conditions and proper line management, listen for sounds of victims and fire, control your emotions and call rescue team if needed. The guideline should be tied off to a substantial object if a drastic change of direction is made... this will keep the line tight.

REMEMBER: Team searches are difficult and require discipline and training. A thorough understanding of equipment and the operation are required before participation. These evolutions are not an exact science as no two searches will be alike. It is recommended that departments forming RIT teams receive proper training from qualified trainers within the fire service. This outline is intended only as a guide to provide some insight into what is required to safely perform these difficult procedures and is not intended to replace your own SOGs and proper training.

STAY SAFE AND GOOD LUCK!
